ACS Board Photo Shoot

This is a careers-oriented event where our members can have a professional headshot taken in the law quad. This event is geared towards supporting students in building their professional image, as they may need the headshot for their LinkedIn profiles or job applications and supporting a key professional development tool that other student organizations already offer.

Presidential Emergency and National Security Powers at the Southern Border: Potential for Abuse

On May 11, 2023, DHS and DOJ issued the Lawful Pathways Rule, "encouraging the use of lawful pathways and imposing a rebuttable presumption of asylum ineligibility on those who do not use them."

On June 4, 2024, President Biden issued a Proclamation on Securing the Border, which provided that "[t]here are more people around the world who are displaced from their homes today than at any point in time since World War II." Accordingly, "we have been experiencing substantial levels of migration" at our southern border.

"Despite the strengthened consequences in place at our border through the Lawful Pathways rule and the related measures that have led to record returns and removals, encounter levels are exceeding our capacity to deliver those consequences in a timely manner due to the outdated laws and limited resources we have available."

This program will discuss these developments and the scope of the President's power to take extraordinary measures - without prior approval from Congress - to address migration and the potential for abuse of that power.

The Impacts and Effects of Capital Punishment: The Death Penalty in America

This program aims to foster policy discussions related to the implementation and the use of capital punishment throughout the United States, particularly within the state of Georgia. A moderated panel featuring both students (from the Capital Defenders Clinic) and professionals (from the Capital Habeas Unit and GA Innocence Project, among others) will discuss capital punishment and its impacts on both the American Criminal Justice System and incarcerated Americans. This event will be co-sponsored with GSU's Criminal Law Society.

ACS Call-Out

This event is a general call-out for anyone interested in joining the ACS chapter at Maurer. This meeting will gauge interest levels of 1Ls and recruit students to join ACS. We plan on providing pizza for students to eat while we introduce the board, explain ACS's mission, and provide information about upcoming events.
