ACS Talk with Gary "Joey" Johnson

Gary "Joey" Johnson, the name plaintiff in the Supreme Court case, Texas v. Johnson, will give a talk about the First Amendment over zoom. He will speak about the first amendment and current threats to the freedom of speech before opening up to a Q and A session.

Screening of "Heightened Scrutiny"

In collaboration with the Northeastern Law's Queer Caucus, we plan to screen Sam Feder's documentary "Heightened Scrutiny" on 10/22 at 6pm!

Sam Feder (they/them) is a trans documentarian whose films focus on the intersection of media and politics along the lines of race, class, and gender.

Their documentary "Heightened Scrutiny" follows ACLU attorney Chase Strangio, the first openly trans person to argue before the Supreme Court, as he fights a high-stakes legal battle to overturn Tennessee's ban on gender-affirming care for transgender youth (United States v. Skrmetti). Chase and other trans activists like Laverne Cox and Elliot Page examine how media bias influences the public’s perception of trans rights.

Obergefell: Past, Present, and Future

Join OUTLaw and ACS for a panel discussing the precedent of Obergefell v. Hodges and the future of gay marriage in the United States. Guest speakers Milan Pham, from Equality NC, and Kelly Parry-Johnson, from Advocates for Trans Equality, will provide invaluable insight on the precedent with time for a Q&A at the end. As part of the Human Rights in Practice series, join the Center for International and Comparative Law and the International Human Rights Clinic for this program featuring Rikki Nathanson, Senior Advisor, Global Trans Program, Outright International; and Ryan Thoreson, Assistant Professor of Law, University of Cincinnati College of Law, who will discuss advocacy efforts aimed at addressing human rights violations on the basis of gender, gender identity, and sexual orientation. Moderated by Aya Fujimura-Fanselow, Clinical Professor of Law (Teaching) and Supervising Attorney, International Human Rights Clinic, Duke Law.
