WashU Law ACS is excited to host a conversation with Megan Green, President of the Saint Louis Board of Aldermen, and Professor Jonathan Smith, who teaches Local Government Law.
Together, they will explore the role of local democracy in shaping daily life, including President Green’s path into public service, the structure and responsibilities of the Board of Aldermen, and how law and policymaking intersect at the municipal level.
Students will gain perspective on how local government impacts critical issues like housing, public safety, and community development, and why civic participation—especially voting—matters most in local elections. Lunch will be provided.
Former Texas House Representative John Turner, a current partner at Haynes and Boone, will discuss the Texas Constitution, the role we have in amending it, and the ways in which it is currently being threatened.

As part of the Human Rights in Practice series, join the Center for International and Comparative Law and the International Human Rights Clinic for this program featuring Rikki Nathanson, Senior Advisor, Global Trans Program, Outright International; and Ryan Thoreson, Assistant Professor of Law, University of Cincinnati College of Law, who will discuss advocacy efforts aimed at addressing human rights violations on the basis of gender, gender identity, and sexual orientation.
