Washington, DC — American Constitution Society President Russ Feingold released the following statement in response to the recent court decisions limiting absentee voting extensions in Wisconsin amidst the pandemic.

“Free and fair elections are the bedrock of our democracy, and Americans should not have to make the terrible choice between their health and their right to vote as they are being forced to do today in Wisconsin. ACS will be watching to ensure that states live up to their obligation to provide their citizens a meaningful opportunity to exercise their rights in 2020 and beyond. We will have an election in November, and it is on all of us to make certain that such a choice is not put to our people once again.”

ACS believes that the Constitution is “of the people, by the people, and for the people.” We interpret the Constitution based on its text and against the backdrop of history and lived experience. Through a diverse nationwide network of progressive lawyers, law students, judges, scholars, and many others, we work to uphold the Constitution in the 21st Century by ensuring that law is a force for protecting our democracy and the public interest and for improving people’s lives.
