Washington, D.C. -- The American Constitution Society released the following statement on the election of the 47th President of the United States:

“Our Democracy and our commitment to the rule of law and our belief in the law as a means to improve the lives of all Americans does not hinge on the election of one person or one president. While we need to brace ourselves against the recurrent rise of white supremacy that has been a part of this country’s struggle since its very founding, ACS will continue to work with our network and allies to fight for the rule of law, our rights, our courts, and progressive laws that will benefit all Americans, advance equity and justice, and guard against the abuse of power. As we await Inauguration Day on January 20, we must continue to vigilantly support the peaceful transfer of power and not forget the violence of January 6, 2021.

We know the days and years ahead will be challenging. We know this because we have been here before; in fact, almost 25 years ago ACS was born from times like these. We have seen again and again that our most challenging times provide opportunities for us to lean into our creativity and ingenuity, grow our network, strengthen our state-based work, create partnerships with like-minded advocates, and map out new routes to achieve our goals. We remain committed to do this again and stand ready to join our network members and supporters, both new and old, in defending our Democracy and the rule of law and fighting for equality for all.

Now more than ever, it is critical that progressives come together as a community to uphold and protect our democracy and Constitution."
