ACS Austin: Central Texas Juneteenth Parade

Join the ACS Austin Lawyer Chapter for the 2021 Central Texas Juneteenth Parade. The Chapter will be marching in the parade and passing out ACS Pocket Constitutions. Gather at 9 a.m. Parade begins at 10 a.m. at the intersection of 14th and Comal.

Juneteenth, also known as "Freedom Day" or "Emancipation Day," commemorates the announcement of the abolition of slavery in Texas. While President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation ended slavery on January 1, 1863, the Proclamation had little effect in the state of Texas. On June 19, 1865, a Union Army General read General Orders No. 3 to the people of Galveston, Texas.

"The people of Texas are informed that, in accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This involves an absolute equality of personal rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and hired labor.”
