Justice Karl Procaccini

Justice Karl C. Procaccini grew up in Mystic, Connecticut. He graduated from Harvard College with his A.B., magna cum laude, in 2005. He then moved to Egypt, where he taught high school and earned his LL.M. in International and Comparative Law from The American University in Cairo. Justice Procaccini received his J.D., magna cum laude, from Harvard Law School in 2010. Justice Procaccini began his legal career in Minnesota, clerking for Judge Diana E. Murphy of the United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit and Chief Judge Michael J. Davis of the United States District Court for the District of Minnesota. Until 2019, Justice Procaccini was a partner at the Minneapolis law firm Greene Espel PLLP, where his practice focused on civil litigation, investigations, and global compliance counseling.
After leaving private practice, Justice Procaccini served as General Counsel & Deputy Chief of Staff in the Office of Governor Tim Walz & Lt. Governor Peggy Flanagan. In recognition of his work on Minnesota’s response to COVID-19, he was named a 2020 Attorney of the Year by Minnesota Lawyer, and he received the 2021 Public Attorney Award of Excellence from the Public Law Section of the Minnesota State Bar Association. Before his appointment to the Minnesota Supreme Court, Justice Procaccini served as a visiting professor at the University of St. Thomas School of Law. He has previously served as an adjunct professor at the University of St. Thomas School of Law and William Mitchell College of Law.
Justice Procaccini is a fellow of the American Bar Foundation and a past chair of the Minnesota State Bar Association’s International Business Law Section. He also served as the executive board president and advisory board co-chair of the Minneapolis-St. Paul Lawyer Chapter of the American Constitution Society. He and his wife, Dr. Nayla Hamdi, live in Minneapolis, and they enjoy music, theater, biking, and hiking throughout Minnesota.
Please join ACS and the Public Interest Law Student Association (PILSA) in welcoming William Taylor, Deputy Director of Second Amendment Litigation, and Priyanka Gupta Sen, Counsel, from Everytown Law for Gun Safety for a discussion on the upcoming U.S. v. Rahimi decision and the current state of 2nd Amendment litigation. Rahimi is the first case to reach the Court since its 2022 decision in Bruen, which required the constitutionality of gun laws to be determined primarily by looking to the second amendment's text, history and tradition. This is a great opportunity to hear from public interest litigators who are currently practicing in the field.

Jonathan Kanter, Assistant Attorney General for the DOJ Antitrust Division, joins ACS at NDLS to discuss his advocacy for strong and meaningful antitrust enforcement and competition policy. Mr. Kanter has been a partner in the Washington, D.C. offices of two national law firms and was the founder of a boutique antitrust law firm dedicated to promoting antitrust enforcement. Mr. Kanter began his career as an attorney for the Federal Trade Commission's Bureau of Competition. He earned his J.D. from Washington University in St. Louis and his B.A. from State University of New York at Albany.
Professor Roger Alford will moderate the discussion with Assistant Attorney General Kanter. Professor Alford served as the Deputy Assistant Attorney General for International Affairs with the Antitrust Division of the DOJ from 2017-2019.
