Welcome Back & Justice in Action with Death Penalty Alternatives

Kick off the semester with ACS & GPILSA (Government and Public Interest Law Student Association)! We'll start with a brief introduction to who we are, why to join, and how to get involved before moving into the heart of the event. Together with Death Penalty Alternatives for Arizona and Arizonans for Effective Public Safety, we'll engage in a meaningful conversation on the role of advocacy in shaping fairer systems of justice and how students can make an impact.

The featured speakers for the event are:

Sam Kooistra, Staff Counsel - Arizona Capital Representation Project

Lindsay Herf, Executive Director - Arizona Justice Project

Gretchen McClellan-Singh, Executive Director - Arizona Board of Executive Clemency

The event will be moderated by Randy McDonald, Supervising Attorney at ASU’s Post-Conviction Clinic.

The event is co-sponsored by GPILSA.

Prof. Corinna Lain – Secrets of the Killing State: the Untold Story of Lethal Injection Book Talk

Secrets of the Killing State pulls back the curtain of secrecy, presenting a view of lethal injection that states have worked hard to hide. The story of lethal injection is a story of state law-breaking and cover-ups, fake science and torturous drugs, gross incompetence by woefully inept executioners, and a stunning state indifference to the plight of the prisoners who are executed. People know there are problems with lethal injection, but they don’t know much about what those problems are, or how they came about, or why they matter. Secrets of the Killing State answers those questions, taking readers on an unprecedented journey into the notoriously secretive world of American executions.

This engaging, meticulously researched, and utterly compelling exposé aims to prick the American conscience, spark outrage, and serve as a catalyst for important conversations about the propriety of state killing itself.

Professor Corinna Barrett Lain will be giving a talk about her book, Secrets of the Killing State. The talk will be moderated by University of North Carolina School of Law Professor, Jain Eisha.

ACS General Body Meeting

The General Body Meeting is one of the most important events of the year, as it is mandatory in our law school, and because it helps bring 1Ls into the organization. At this meeting, we elect a 1L representative and get input on what events students want to see throughout the year. We intend to offer food to make sure people actually come and stay engaged! The event is the first formal point of contact students have with ACS in the semester.

September Monthly Meeting

This will be the first monthly meeting of the LSU Chapter of the ACS during the 2025-2026 school year. The executive board will introduce themselves, they will introduce ACS, and then announce the programming for the semester.
