WashU Law: Building the Progressive Bar

Join WashU Law’s American Constitution Society for an evening of dinner and structured networking designed to strengthen the progressive legal community in St. Louis. This event will connect students with attorneys working in civil rights, public defense, immigrant justice, and public-interest litigation as well as other areas of law, fostering meaningful mentorship and long-term professional relationships.

The program will feature brief remarks from ACS leadership and alumni, followed by intentional, interest-based table conversations over dinner. Building the Progressive Bar reflects ACS’s commitment to cultivating a strong, inclusive, and justice-oriented bench and bar by supporting the next generation of progressive lawyers. Dinner provided. All WashU Law students welcome, as well as members of the ACS St. Louis Lawyers Chapter.

"Restoring Justice" a Discussion with Professor Rachel López

Join us to hear from Professor Rachel López about her new project. The piece, Restoring Justice, was co-authored with a mother whose son was killed in a high school shooting. It recounts the mother’s efforts to pursue restorative justice with those responsible and details the institutional barriers that she encountered. The authors develop a doctrinal and normative critique of “punitive victimhood,” which is a framework that recognizes rights only insofar as they align with criminal punishment. They argue that victims should retain the right to hope that those who caused profound harm to them are capable of transformation. Recognition of that right would require states to facilitate restorative justice just as they facilitate criminal punishment.

WCL ACS & LALSA Present: A Conversation with Judge Brad Garcia of the D.C. Circuit

Join the American Constitution Society and the Latin Law Students Association for a conversation with Judge Bradley Garcia (U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit). ACS President Phil Brest, the former White House Senior Counsel who directed the Biden administration’s judicial nominations, will lead the conversation. Together, they will explore the evolving role of the federal judiciary and issues like the cases shaping constitutional law, the future of administrative and regulatory authority after recent landmark decisions, and what it means to pursue a career in public interest law. A light lunch will be served.

Participation in this event is open to all members of the AUWCL community, regardless of background. Our events, programs, and activities are inclusive and do not restrict participation based on personal identity or characteristics, including but not limited to race, color, national origin (or shared ancestry), religion, sex, age, sexual orientation, disability, or veteran status.
