Constitution Day and Intro Meeting with Minnesota Law ACS!

Join ACS @ "The U" for an Introductory Meeting and a Celebration of Constitution Day!

Constitution Day is celebrated on September 17th each year in the United States to commemorate the signing of the U.S. Constitution by delegates to the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia in 1787. It's also known as Citizenship Day. The day serves to honor the document that outlines the fundamental laws and rights of the nation and to acknowledge the importance of U.S. citizenship.

More about ACS:

The American Constitution Society (ACS) is a progressive legal organization focused on ensuring the law serves as a force for democracy, public interest, and improving people's lives. It aims to realize the promises of the Constitution by building a diverse legal community dedicated to defending democracy, equity, liberty, access to justice, and the rule of law. ACS has a large network of student and lawyer chapters across the United States and works to shape debates on key legal and public policy issues.

The mission of ACS is to support and advocate for laws and legal systems that redress the founding failures of our Constitution, strengthen our democratic legitimacy, uphold the rule of law, and realize the promise of equality for all, including people of color, women, LGBTQ+ people, people with disabilities, and other historically excluded communities.

Constitution Day with Abbe Lowe

The American Constitution Society will host an event in the law commons to recognize Constitution Day. We will have a speaker, D.C. attorney Abbe Lowell, who will appear via Zoom to talk with the students. Lunch will be provided.

ACS Constitution Day

The e-board tabled all day in preparation of a Constitution Day event which we helped organize and co-sponsored. The lunch-time event consisted of a panel of faculty who discussed recent Supreme Court cases. At our table, we gave out wrist bands, stickers, ACS luggage tags, pocket-sized Constitutions and Declarations of Independence, and even feather quill pens! We also had a copy of the Constitution that students were able to sign themselves. Between the tabling and Supreme Court review, there were many great discussions about the Constitution and the current state politics and the judiciary.

Expungement, Public Service, and Judicial Impact

Judge Gammage will join us for lunch to discuss expungement, including how he came to start the expungement externship at NDLS and how he came to care so much about expungement as a legal issue, and his pathway to the bench, including his work with the prosecutor's office, the public defender's office, and the City of South Bend.
