Tribal Sovereignty and the Future of the Indian Child Welfare Act

Mondale Hall, Room 55, Minneapolis, Minnesota

On November 9, 2022, the Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in Haaland v. Brackeen, a case which will decide whether the Indian Child Welfare Act is constitutional. This decision will have bombastic implications, not just for Native families and children, but for the sovereignty of Tribal Nations across Minnesota and the U.S.

Please join the American Constitution Society and the Native American Law Students Association to learn about the staggering consequences of this decision for Native communities. Our guest panelists include the Director of the ICWA Law Center, the Professor helming the University's Racial Justice Clinic, and practicing attorneys and judges who specialize in Indian Law. We are proud to serve catering from the Indigenous-owned Gatherings Cafe at this event.
