The Eviction Crisis and its Impact on BIPOC communities

Zoom: https://utexas.zoom.us/j/94875406907,  Meeting ID: 948 7540 6907., Austin, Texas

An eviction crisis -- fueled by a history of racially discriminatory housing policies, a lack of affordable housing, chronic under funding of government subsidized housing, and inadequate tenant protections -- is growing in magnitude as the COVID-19 pandemic continues. This event will examine the eviction crisis and the disproportionate impact it’s having on black and brown communities. The event will feature a short presentation before shifting to a panel discussion featuring housing lawyers, community organizers, and a local judge who see the impacts of this crisis firsthand.

Featuring:

Jarymar Arana, Tenant Organizer from Building and Strengthening Tenant Action (BASTA)

Judge Nick Chu, Justice of the Peace for Precinct Five

Chrishelle Palay, Organizer from Houston Organizing Movement for Equity

Farwah Raza, Attorney, Legal Aid for Northwest Texas

Heather Way, Attorney and Director of the Community Development Clinic at Texas Law
