Immigration Detention in the Midwest

Rubloff 150, Chicago, IL

Join ACS and NLG for a discussion on expanding access to counsel in immigration court. Through the lens of HB 2790, a recently passed Illinois law that grants immigrants no-cost representation in deportation proceedings, we'll explore lawyers' roles in expanding the scope of legal possibility for unrepresented parties. We'll discuss other recent policy wins, including the end of immigration detention in Illinois, and how to mitigate regional disparities in how the legal system treats immigrant clients. Our conversation will feature Hena Mansori, director of the newly created immigration unit at the Office of Cook County Public Defender; Ruben Loyo, director of the Detention Project at the National Immigrant Justice Center; and Amanda Garcia, managing attorney at the Vera Institute of Justice.
