From Defendant to Defender

TNH 2.138, Austin, Texas

Join the American Constitution Society (ACS) and the William Wayne Justice Center in welcoming Attorney Jarrett Adams to speak at the law school. Adams will speak to the connection between trauma and the law, the effects of a system that works against those who have already had difficult life experiences, and how law students and future lawyers can work to change the system.

Adams clerked for the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York and worked at the Innocence Project before he launched the Law Offices of Jarrett Adams, PLLC. Additionally, Adams is the co-founder of Life After Justice, a nonprofit dedicated to preventing wrongful convictions and building an ecosystem of support and empowerment for exonerees. In Adams’ highly acclaimed first book, he talks about his fight towards exoneration after a wrongful conviction. The memoir follows the aftermath of reclaiming and rebuilding his life after justice and his drive to help other exonerees do it too.

Adams earned his Juris Doctorate from Loyola University Chicago School of Law. He was awarded the National Defender Investigator Association Investigator of the Year award for his work with the clemency petition of Reynolds Wintersmith, ultimately granted by President Barack Obama.
