The event is a lunch talk with the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Independence of Judges and Lawyers - Margaret Satterthwaite. The topic is "Independence of Judges and Lawyers around the World." It is co-sponsored by the Columbia Society of International Law (CSIL) and the Human Rights Institute of Columbia Law School. It will be moderated by Priya Baranwal, a former judge from India who is the LL.M. Representative of ACS at Columbia Law School. The conversation will focus on the functioning of the Special Rapporteur's mandate; how the independence of judges and the Bar is ensured in foreign jurisdictions; the guardrails needed to protect the judiciary from external influences and ensure fair trials, and the role of law students and practitioners.
