Washington, DC — As part of its celebration of Black History Month, the American Constitution Society released the following statement in support of the California Task Force to Study and Develop Reparation Proposals for African Americans:

“ACS applauds the work of the California Task Force to Study and Develop Reparation Proposals for African Americans. The Task Force's ambitious interim report sets forth a robust and comprehensive analysis of the compounding harms that African Americans endured through slavery and related systems of white supremacy and presents concrete proposals to begin to address those harms in California. We encourage California policymakers to engage with the report, its findings, and recommendations, and we encourage policymakers across the country to undertake similar work in their jurisdictions.”

ACS supports movements for truth, racial healing, and transformation in the United States. Racial inequality is deeply rooted in the history of this country, from the drafting of our first laws to the very design of our government. Fully dismantling white supremacy will require comprehensive transformation of our laws, legal systems, and institutions. ACS believes it is important for the legal community to be active participants in this work because of how intertwined the law has been with the perpetuation of white supremacy and racial oppression. As a progressive legal organization, ACS is committed to reckoning with how the law and the legal profession have contributed to perpetuating racial oppression and advocating for the changes needed to achieve a legal system that promotes racial equality.

ACS invites its student and lawyer chapters, and all ACS members to join in reckoning with our laws and institutions, and in reimagining a legal system that is grounded in racial equality and justice. Learn more about ACS’s TRHT efforts.
