Conversation with Former EEOC Commissioner Chai Feldblum

Chai Feldblum is a Partner and Director of Workplace Culture Consulting at Morgan Lewis. From 2010 to 2019 she served as a Democratic Commissioner of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), the federal agency charged with implementing the nation’s employment non-discrimination laws. Prior to her appointment on the EEOC, Feldblum was a law professor at Georgetown, where she founded the law school’s Federal Legislation Clinic and worked on behalf of Catholic Charities USA and a range of disability rights organizations. 

Throughout her career, Feldblum has focused on social justice issues at the federal level. She played a leading role in the drafting and negotiating of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 and the ADA Amendments Act of 2008. She helped draft the federal bill to protect LGBT people from discrimination, led the EEOC in protecting LGBT people under existing sex discrimination law, and was the first openly lesbian Commissioner on the EEOC. With her Republican colleague, Victoria Lipnic, Feldblum co-chaired a Select Task Force on the Study of Harassment and issued a groundbreaking report in 2016 laying out a roadmap for harassment prevention.

Feldblum attended Barnard College and Harvard Law School. She clerked for Judge Frank M. Coffin on the First Circuit Court of Appeals and for Justice Harry A. Blackmun on the United States Supreme Court.
