DHS v. Regents and the Future of DACA

Earlier this year, the Supreme Court issued its decision in Department of Homeland Security vs. Regents of the University of California—a case that had the potential to upend the lives of some 800,000 young people whose families brought them to the United States as children. The court found that the Trump Administration’s decision to end the program was “arbitrary and capricious,” and therefore granted temporary relief to DACA recipients, otherwise known as “Dreamers.” Although the Court’s decision was a sigh of relief for many Dreamers, DACA is still in limbo and its future is uncertain.

Nicole Hallett

Professor Hallett is an Associate Clinical Professor of Law at the University of Chicago. She directs the Immigrants’ Rights Clinic, which provides legal representation to immigrant communities in Chicago, including individual representation of immigrants in removal proceedings, immigration-related complex federal litigation, and policy and community education projects on behalf of community-based organizations. Professor Hallett’s work has appeared in the New York Times, NPR, The Nation, the Today Show, the Intercept, and the Associated Press, among other places.

Rafael Robles

Rafael is a Senior Innovation and Design Consultant at Doblin and co-Founder of Duo, a non-profit organization that tackles gentrification in Chicago through community-based development and innovation. Rafael immigrated to the United States when he was 13 years old, and was one of the first Dreamers to receive deferred action. Rafael’s story has been shared by Senator Dick Durbin on the floor of the United States Senate, as well as in the New York Times, Chicago Tribune, the Associated Press, NPR, and Crain’s.
