Dinner Table Discussion: School Vouchers, Charters, and the Privatization of Education Funding

The ACS Dinner Table Discussion series aims to provide a space for progressive students to grapple with issues that divide the movement, both in its goals and practices. These discussions will be intimate and feature a moderator with an interest and experience in the discussion's topic. 

In the last few decades, states across the U.S. have increasingly turned to strategies such as school voucher programs, tuition tax credits, and charter schools to outsource public education. Proponents of these programs often tout them as efficient spending and increased choice for low-income students who would otherwise be in failing schools, while others decry them as further segregating and eroding a valuable public school system. Join Dr. Samuel E. Abrams, Director of the National Center for the Study of Privatization in Education at Columbia University's Teachers College, ACS, and your fellow students to discuss the nuances of privatization in K-12 education and how progressive values fit into the debate.
