Washington, DC – The U.S. Department of Justice has indicted former President Trump on criminal charges related to his taking and failure to return classified material after he departed the White House. In response to the indictment, the American Constitution Society released the following statement:

“Our democracy rests on the rule of law and nobody being above it. The indictment of former President Trump by the U.S. Department of Justice is a critical step towards accountability and affirming that the rule of law cannot be overcome by money or title,” said ACS President Russ Feingold. “In contrast to what Trump has publicly alleged, neither running for office nor serving in office is a shield against accountability and should not be confused as one. We commend the Department of Justice for its thorough and fact-driven investigation. Attempts to discredit the DOJ or its investigation willfully ignore the facts and are reckless ploys to undermine our institutions and the rule of law. Now more than ever, the law’s status above persons and parties must be affirmed.”
