ACS Bay Area: Juneteenth x Pride - Celebrations of Freedom and its Intersectionality

Join us for a program reviewing the history and intersectionality of Juneteenth and Pride. As we celebrate Juneteenth and Pride - celebrations of resistance, resilience, and reclamation - a panel of Black LGBTQ+ legal professionals will reflect on what this intersectionality means to them. Acknowledging that this is a challenging time for members of the Black LGBTQ+ communities, especially for transgender and gender non-conforming people, we will explore topics of concern and ways that attorneys can be better allies or advocates for our clients. All allies welcome!

Presented by Racial Justice Taskforce, American Constitution Society Bay Area Lawyer Chapter, Charles Houston Bar Association (CHBA), California Association of Black Lawyers (CABL), NBA Region IX, CLA Litigation Section, CLA DEI Committee, & Bay Area Lawyers for Individual Freedom (BALIF).

How Reverse Search Warrants Allow Google Searches to be Handed to Police

Reverse search warrants require a provider–almost always Google–to search through its entire database of location and keyword search data to identify all users or devices that have been in a geographic area during a certain time period and any person who has entered a certain word or phrase into a search engine. These warrants pose serious threats to Fourth Amendment rights by allowing the government to indiscriminately parse through databases without probable cause or naming a particular suspect. They turn millions, if not billions of innocent people into suspects. Panelists Richard Salgado (Stanford Law School) and Jennifer Granick (ACLU) will discuss how geofence and keyword warrants work, their impact on Fourth Amendment rights, and recent cases considering their constitutionality.

Wednesday, May 29 from 1-2 PM. Lunch provided for RSVPs.

ACS CA: The Constitution and Voting Rights: A Conspicuous Failure

To understand the source of the crises currently threatening the survival of our system of government, we must look to our history. The delegates’ omissions from the US Constitution have spawned significant misconceptions that now threaten the survival of our system of government. It is therefore vital to explore these omissions.

Please join the ACS San Diego, Bay Area, and Los Angles Lawyer Chapters in welcoming, Lawrence Goldstone, author of the groundbreaking new book, Imperfect Union, and National Book Award finalist Professor Adam Winkler (UCLA), as they discuss why the delegates’ refusal to include uniform standards for voting in national elections has haunted the United States’ quest to be a true democracy from its inception to this very day.
