Our Spring 2024 First General Meeting will include a discussion on recent Executive Orders and the Equal Rights Amendment. We will be hosting guest speakers Professor Leslie Jacobs and Professor Rachel Van Cleave to discuss these topics and answer questions. Additionally, we will forecast upcoming chapter events and solicit feedback from those in attendance. Food and beverages will be provided.

This country is grappling with a crisis in our judiciaries. Many look to state constitutions and state courts to serve as a bulwark against a conservative supermajority at the U.S. Supreme Court whose hyper-partisan decisions have undermined fundamental rights, emboldened the conservative legal movement, and fomented a growing legitimacy crisis. But as we look to state judges to help preserve the rights and institutions fundamental to our democracy, they are facing their own threats from gerrymandered legislatures and from within their own judiciaries. 

With the North Carolina Supreme Court potentially poised to override the will of voters and choose its own justice for itself, what steps can be taken to protect the legitimacy and independence of judiciaries throughout the country? Will the undermining of voting rights and the ideological weaponization of ethics rules and impeachment lead to weakened judiciaries that are unable to serve their core mission as protectors of the rule of law?

Join the American Constitution Society as we consider these and other looming challenges and the role each of us can play in protecting and strengthening our judiciaries.  

Mizzou Law ACS is hosting a Restorative Justice Panel with professors from the law school and the school of social work.

ACS will be collaborating with the Hispanic Law Society regarding current immigration issues and discussing ways to provide legal resources to students impacted. Anglin Fisher, Professor Roisman, Exodus Refugee Immigration, and Karla Lopez Owens.

This event features a panel discussion on the current state of DACA, exploring potential changes and their implications for the future. Attendees will also gain access to a range of valuable resources tailored to support students and attendees navigating this topic.
