Professor Erin Collins and Professor Tom Donnelly will lead a conversation about how recent action by the Trump Administration's Department of Homeland Security implicate the rights enshrined in the First and Fifth Amendments to the Constitution. For example, they will discuss the deportation of hundreds of immigrants to El Salvador without any hearings or other processes that would provide due process, and the arrest of students such as Mahmoud Kahlil and many others after they engaged in protests and other speech unfavored by the current administration.
No RSVP required, and lunch will be provided.
Do unions have standing to challenge the firing of federal workers? Can the president remove executive appointees without just cause? Join SELLA, NLG, and ACS for a discussion on the evolving nature of labor rights and what to expect under a second Trump administration. The panel will feature Professors Bednar, Bodie, Garden, and King, covering a range of pertinent federal and state labor law issues. Plus, enjoy some delicious MESA PIZZA!
Co-Sponsored with the Student Employment and Labor Law Association and the National Lawyers Guild
ACS at UCLA is excited to present a panel addressing the fascinating (and sometimes mysterious) work of state solicitors general, the lawyers who argue appeals on behalf of states in state and federal courts. Especially in this moment, when so much high-profile litigation involves the states as parties on behalf of their residents, this is fascinating and timely work. We are delighted to be joined virtually by Hawaiʻi Solicitor General Kalikoʻonālani D. Fernandes, Illinois Deputy Solicitor General Alex Hemmer, and California Deputy Solicitor General Mica Moore. The discussion will be moderated by Professor Carolyn Shapiro (Chicago-Kent College of Law and Former Illinois Solicitor General). Co-sponsored by the David J. Epstein Program in Public Interest Law & Policy.
