Private: University of Kansas Anti-Creationist Professor Attacked

Two weeks ago we wrote about Professor Paul Mirecki, the chairman of the religious studies department at the University of Kansas. Prof. Mirecki had caused a stir by announcing his intentions to teach a course entitled, "Special Topics in Religion: Intelligent Design, Creationism and other Religious Mythologies."
Mirecki said at the time, ""the KU faculty has had enough. Creationism is mythology, intelligent design is mythology. It's not science. They try to make it sound like science. It clearly is not."
One reader, critical of Mirecki, commented at the time on this site, "The KSU (sic) faculty may wake up one day and find out that it is dangerous to bite the hand that feeds them. Academy freedom is only guaranteed when consumers are freely paying for it; those who use taxpayer largess should have more respect for those who control the purse strings, or at least not be surprised when the repercussions come."
The repercussions came yesterday.
Mirecki was released from the hospital Monday afternoon after he was stalked and attacked by two men, who made references to the recent controversy while beating him, on a roadside in rural Douglas County, Kansas around 6:40 Monday morning.
"I didn't know them, but I'm sure they knew me," Mirecki told the Lawrence (KS) Journal-World.
Douglas County Sheriff's officials are classifying the case as an aggravated battery. More here.
