Universidad de Puerto Rico - PERFIL DEL (DE LA) LITIGANTE POR DERECHO PROPIO

Escuela de Derecho UPR,, San Juan, Puerto Rico

The UPR School of Law chapter of the American Constitution Society invites the community to a conversation on self-representation and access to justice in Puerto Rico, featuring the Hon. Raiza Cajigas Campbell, Director of the Directorate of Judicial Programs of the Office of Courts Administration (OAT), together with Jo Marie González Mercado, MS, and Félix Suazo, Administrative Advisor and Legal Advisor, respectively, at the Directorate.

The panel will discuss the Judiciary's recently published report, Perfil del (de la) Litigante por Derecho Propio: Años fiscales 2020-2021 a 2025-2026, which examines the more than 200,000 people served by the Pro Se Program's orientation centers over the past six fiscal years. The report shows that most people who come to the centers without legal representation are women and heads of household, many with limited income, and that they seek help mainly with family matters such as child support, visitation, custody, and divorce.

Speakers will address the program's history and expansion across the judicial regions, the role of the new Electronic Court platform, and what these findings mean for due process and the right to self-representation.

The event is open to the entire community, and no RSVP is required.
