The Miner's Canary: U.S. Intelligence Activity Over Indians

Sturm College of Law - Room 125, Denver, CO

“Like the miner’s canary, the Indian marks the shift from fresh air to poison gas in our political atmosphere; and our treatment of Indians, even more than our treatment of other minorities, reflects the rise and fall in our democratic faith.” - Felix Cohen (1953)

Please join, as CU Professor and President's Teaching Scholar Glenn Morris spotlights U.S. intelligence actions in Indian Country. His examination reveals the constitutional problems that spill from federal surveillance and infiltration of Indian Nations and Indigenous resistance. Moreover, as agencies outsource intelligence and security work to private corporations, his analysis forecasts the dimming of liberty beyond Indian Country. The ultimate question confronted is: Why should Americans care?
