First Amendment Rights in the ICE Age: Freedom of Speech, Dissent, and Social Media
Join the American Constitution Society on Wednesday, March 25 @ 12pm in Room 301 (lunch provided) for a dual practitioner/academic perspective on First Amendment rights! Given intensifying efforts by DHS and the Trump administration to use social media to track, identify, and label people who oppose ICE’s actions as “domestic terrorists,” this is a timely conversation about the constitutional limits of government surveillance and retaliation against dissent.
Providing the practitioner’s perspective is Jessica Smith Links to an external site., a partner at Holland & Hart and an experienced trial and appellate strategist whose practice centers on complex civil and First Amendment litigation. Jessica will draw on her experience advising clients in crisis, defending constitutional rights in court, and crafting policies and strategic responses to reputational and constitutional attacks.
Providing the academic perspective is Colorado Law’s Professor Scott Skinner‑Thompson, a leading scholar of constitutional law, civil rights, privacy, and LGBTQ+ issues. He will address how government surveillance threatens free speech, equality, and dissent.
