Challenges to a Free Press

https://bccte.zoom.us/j/97355860066

Free and unfettered press, as guaranteed by the First Amendment, is a necessity in a democracy. Today, journalists and news organizations are working to fulfill that important societal role during increasingly challenging circumstances.

In addition to the economic strain on the news industry, cries of "fake news," a polarized public, and mass protests across the nation have created a more difficult, and in some cases a more dangerous environment for journalists. The ACS Boston Law Student Chapter is excited to welcome Katie Townsend, Legal Director at the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, a Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit organization.

At this event Townsend will address the legal challenges facing journalists as they gather and report the news, and the importance of defending freedom of the press now and into the future.
