5 Ways to Mark Constitution Day

Learn, Teach, Write, Organize, and Take Action

September 17 is Constitution Day, which commemorates the signing of our nation’s founding document. Here are five ways you can observe this anniversary.

Learn

Join ACS on Constitution Day for a briefing call on “The Constitution and the 2020 Election,” featuring Leah Litman, Univ. of Michigan Law; Dan Tokaji, OSU Moritz College of Law; and Vincent Southerland, NYU School of Law’s Center on Race, Inequality, and the Law. September 17 at 12 pm ET.

As the presidential election heats up, the future of reproductive justice, voting rights, and criminal justice, among other constitutional commitments, are all at stake. Regardless of who is elected, the president will be asked not only to articulate their vision of the Constitution and who is included in “We the People,” but will also have an opportunity to make that vision and these commitments real through the appointment of judges. Our speakers will discuss what’s at stake and what the candidates should be asked as they seek our nation’s highest office.

Register for the briefing call.

Teach

ACS's Constitution in the Classroom project gives law students and lawyers an opportunity to teach lessons based on the Constitution in elementary, middle, and high schools. It’s a great way to increase constitutional literacy and excite young minds about the Constitution. If you are interested in participating, please email LCEmails@acslaw.org.

Write

Use Constitution Day as a hook for submitting an op-ed to your local paper (including your school newspaper) about current challenges to our constitutional order. Topics you could address might include separation of powers and the importance of congressional oversight over the executive branch, the 19th amendment and women's rights, reproductive justice, voting rights, Second Amendment issues, and racial justice. If you need ideas for drafting or placement, please email us at LCEmails@acslaw.org.

Organize

Commemorate the document’s birthday by hosting an event on Voting Rights, Court Capture, Safeguarding the Rule of Law , or constitutional interpretation.

Take Action

Host or Attend a Secure Our Vote Day of Action on Constitution Day. Search for events near you here.
