Private: 2006 ACS National Convention Registration
ACS will host its 2006 National Convention in Washington, DC next month. Convention registration and hotel reservations are available online, in addition to a complete schedule of events including speakers. If you have not already done so, please register soon, as hotel and convention registration rates will increase on May 19.
Thursday, June 15 will feature the finals of the ACS Constance Baker Motley National Moot Court Competition in Constitutional Law, followed by a welcome reception. Both events will be at Georgetown University Law Center, just down the block from the Convention site at the Hyatt Regency Capitol Hill.
Friday's Convention events will begin with an opening plenary session focusing on the separation of powers, entitled "Restoring the Balance among the Branches," and featuring former Senator Gary Hart, Dawn Johnsen, Harold Koh, Douglas Kmiec and Beth Nolan. Afterwards, a series of breakout sessions will address subjects including: litigating civil liberties cases since 9/11; redistricting; constitutional checks and balances; and the implications of recent exonerations for the criminal justice system.
Friday afternoon will feature a luncheon address by a prominent speaker. Following lunch, there will be breakout sessions that address immigration; litigation on behalf of high-profile clients, featuring a panel of top litigators; structural reform litigation, featuring a panel of federal judges; and federal preemption of state law. These sessions will be followed by a career/networking fair, as well as organizing meetings for student and lawyer chapter leaders.
Former Assistant Attorney General Deval Patrick will deliver a featured address Friday evening, followed by a networking reception for all Convention attendees.
Saturday morning will begin with a plenary panel, "Revitalizing Democracy," featuring Donna Brazile, Representative Artur Davis, Heather Gerken, Ron Klain, Robert Lenhard and John Podesta, followed by breakout sessions on legislative impediments to access to justice; next-generation discrimination; domestic surveillance; and the prosecution of government whistleblowers.
Lunch on Saturday will feature leading Supreme Court correspondents Jan Crawford Greenburg, Linda Greenhouse and Dahlia Lithwick addressing the Court's direction with moderator Tom Goldstein. They will be followed by two sets of breakout sessions. The first will include panels exploring civil rights enforcement; reproductive freedom; the prosecution of public officials; and the Establishment Clause. The later session will explore how to frame and communicate legal issues; restrictions on habeas corpus; and reauthorization of the Voting Rights Act.
In addition, throughout Friday and Saturday, Constitution in the 21st Century issue groups will be meeting to organize their activities over the coming months.
Saturday evening will feature a dinner banquet, during which former Solicitor General Walter Dellinger will deliver remarks on "America's Greatest Lawyer: Abraham Lincoln in Private Practice and Public Life."
Sunday morning will begin with the Convention's final plenary session, "Wealth Inequality: Closing the Gap," featuring Cassandra Butts, Peter Edelman, Alan Jenkins, Judith Lichtman and Goodwin Liu. The Convention will then conclude with closing reflections by Pamela Karlan, Professor of Law at Stanford Law School.
