Southwestern Law School - The Fourteenth Amendment at a Crossroads: Citizenship, Sovereignty, Equality & Civil Rights

W311 & Zoom, Los Angeles, CA

ACS, NALSA, OUTLaw, and ACLU-SW present: The Fourteenth Amendment at a Crossroads: Citizenship, Sovereignty, Equality, and Civil Rights.

More than 150 years after its ratification, the Fourteenth Amendment remains at the center of major constitutional debates over citizenship, tribal sovereignty, equality, immigration, liberty, and civil rights. In recognition of Native American Heritage Month and Transgender Day of Remembrance, this panel brings together scholars to examine birthright citizenship, Native citizenship, tribal sovereignty, immigration, gender and sexuality, reproductive justice, LGBTQ+ civil rights, and constitutional interpretation through one central question: Who is protected by the Constitution, how have those protections developed, and who gets to define their meaning?
