The Honorable Jesse M. Furman is a United States district judge of the Southern District of New York, where he has presided over a wide range of complex civil and criminal matters. Prior to his confirmation to the bench in 2012, Judge Furman served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York, including as the Counselor to the Attorney General of the United States and then as the deputy chief appellate attorney.

Judge Furman clerked for Judge Michael B. Mukasey of S.D.N.Y., Judge José Cabranes of the Second Circuit, and Justice David Souter of the United States Supreme Court. He earned his B.A. from Harvard University in 1994 and from the Yale Law School in 1998. 

The conversation will explore the role of procedure in high stakes litigation. Far from a technicality, the procedures that are followed in the resolution of consequential disputes shapes whose claims can be heard, what evidence can be reviewed, and what relief is available. This discussion, moderated by Professor William Eskridge, will consider how and why procedure matters for the legal profession in this moment.
