Paul A. Race, MD, JD, is trained and practiced in both medicine and law, with scholarly expertise in health law, constitutional law, real estate, and torts. He earned a biology degree from Rice University, an MD from the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, and completed OB/GYN residency at SUNY Upstate Medical Center before practicing in Durham, North Carolina. He later earned his JD from Duke University School of Law and practiced primarily in medical malpractice defense, along with contract, real estate, small business, and insurance law.

Dr. Race joined Southern University Law Center as a visiting professor in 2003 and focuses on health policy, constitutional law, and emerging issues in law and medicine. He has been a constitutional law professor for over two decades.
