Red and Blue: Florida's Toxic Algae Situation

Florida State University College of Law B.K. Roberts Hall Room 208, Tallahassee, FL

The event is about the algae blooms occurring off the South-West Coast of Florida. Specifically, the event is about the cause of the Algae Blooms, its environmental impact, and possible policy solutions. Though a natural occurrence, the recent algae blooms have been intensified by chemical runoff stemming from sugar plantations in central Florida and the drastic cuts to the Department of Environmental Protection made by the current gubernatorial administration. The blooms have had a devastating effect on wildlife; local economies; and the health of the residents who live on or near the coast. Our chapter is co-hosting this event with the Animal Legal Defense Fund and the Environmental Law Society - both RSOs at FSU College of Law. Our speaker shall be Anne Harvey-Holbrook, a staff attorney for the Save the Manatee Club.
