San Antonio Mayor Julián Castro, the first Latino to give a keynote address at a Democratic National Convention in 2012, is serving his third term as mayor. During his tenure, Mayor Castro led a successful campaign to expand Pre-K educational services for more than 22,000 youngsters, and Forbes recently hailed the city as among the top “tech hotspots” in the country. You can hear Mayor Castro and a stellar lineup of speakers at the 2014 ACS National Convention.
We are pleased to announce our 2014 Progressive Champions, who will be honored at the 2014 ACS National Convention. Peter B. Edelman, a distinguished law professor and director of the Center on Poverty, Inequality, and Public Policy, at Georgetown University Law School, is a nationally renowned advocate for the nation’s most vulnerable. Rick A. Palmore, General Mills’ executive vice president, general counsel, chief compliance and risk management officer, and secretary, is a celebrated attorney and corporate leader who has sparked industry-wide attention on the value and importance of a diverse workplace.
We are also proud to host a conversation between U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor and longtime civil rights attorney and leader Theodore M. Shaw at the 2014 ACS National Convention. Justice Sotomayor and Professor Shaw, classmates at Cardinal Spellman High School in the Bronx, will reflect on their personal journeys through tumultuous times and how they overcame obstacles to reach the very top of their respective careers.
Finally, we are offering convention attendees the opportunity to connect with other ACS members from around the country by attending a performance by the critically acclaimed political satire group The Capitol Steps. For more than 30 years, the Capitol Steps have been entertaining audiences across the nation, including five U.S. presidents. You, too, can see them live at the 2014 ACS National Convention.
