Courtni Y. Burleson

Courtni Burleson joined ACS in January 2015 was Senior Director of Foundation Relations. She oversaw the organization’s grant reporting and foundation fundraising activities that support ACS’s many programs.

Prior to joining ACS, Burleson worked on criminal justice policy issues as the staff attorney for the D.C. Sentencing and Criminal Code Revision Commission, serving as the primary resource for guidance and policy support on the District’s Voluntary Sentencing Guidelines. Previously, she worked in New York as a senior program associate with the Vera Institute of Justice, Center on Sentencing and Corrections. She has litigated criminal appeals with the Office of the Appellate Defender in New York City and served as a motions clerk and intern with public defender offices in Washington, D.C. and California. She has also worked as a freelance editor, collaborating on both fiction and non-fiction projects.

Burleson received her J.D. from UC Berkeley School of Law, and her B.A and M.S. in Justice, Law & Society from American University. While at Berkeley, she was the editor-in-chief of the African American Law & Policy Report and is a former co-chair, board member and fellowship coordinator for the Berkeley Law Foundation. Burleson is a member of the New York Bar, the District of Columbia Bar and the Bar of the U.S. Supreme Court.
