Statement from Caroline Fredrickson, President, American Constitution Society
“President Trump has a radical far right agenda that is out of step with most Americans; the selection of Brett Kavanaugh as his Supreme Court nominee is simply part of that agenda. Kavanaugh was hand selected by the radical right in this country expressly to target laws, freedoms and protections they have been trying to undo for decades. Now the future of women’s reproductive health, our health care system, workers’ rights, access to the voting booth, and environmental safeguards all hang in the balance.
“The Supreme Court is supposed to be the last hope of those seeking justice against powerful and often discriminatory special interests. The next Justice should be someone who will look out for the needs of everyday Americans, not just the powerful and wealthy.
“As the Senate begins hearings on Kavanaugh's nomination, the public should take care not to fall for empty pledges from Trump and the Senate majority that they just want someone who will uphold the Constitution. They should also be wary of fake statements from Kavanaugh that he will just follow settled law or just make rulings based on the merits of the cases before him. No words or pledges can change the fact that this is a pick designed to undo many of the freedoms and protections Americans hold dear.”
