A Briefing on the Marriage Equality Cases

The American Constitution Society presents

A Briefing on the Marriage Equality Cases

On Friday, April 24, ACS will host a briefing on the marriage equality cases that will be argued before the Supreme Court the following week. In the consolidated cases, the Court is asked to decide whether the Fourteenth Amendment requires a state to license a marriage between two people of the same sex and whether it requires a state to recognize a same-sex marriage that was lawfully performed out-of-state. Panelists will detail the history of the marriage debate, the range of ways in which the Court could decide the case, and the implications of the decision on the future of LGBT rights. The discussion will feature ACS Board Member Paul Smith, partner at Jenner & Block and Steve Sanders, associate professor of law at Indiana Maurer School of Law; and Sarah Warbelow, legal director at Human Rights Campaign. Amy Howe, editor and reporter at SCOTUSBlog, will moderate the discussion.
