The First Amendment & The Trump Era
Please join the John Marshall Law School chapter of ACS as we host "The First Amendment & The Trump Era."
In honor of the 30th anniversary of Texas v. Johnson (1989), we are hosting an interactive panel discussing the dangers of xenophobia, forced patriotism, and the silencing of political dissenters in 2019. Our guest panelist speakers are Gregory Johnson, Robert Justin Goldstein, and Ann Lousin.
Gregory Johnson became the defendant in the landmark Supreme Court decision Texas v. Johnson (1989), which established burning the American flag in protest as constitutionally protected speech under the First Amendment.
Robert Justin Goldstein is a professor emeritus of political science at Oakland University and author of four books on the history of American flag desecration, including Burning the Flag: The Great 1989–1990 American Flag Desecration Controversy (Kent State University Press, 1996).
Ann Lousin is a professor at the John Marshall Law School and a constitutional law scholar.
Dinner will be served and attendees of age will receive two complimentary alcoholic beverage tickets.
