Bay Area Lawyer Chapter Hosts 2007-08 Supreme Court Term Review
On Wednesday, July 23rd, the Bay Area Lawyer Chapter of the American Constitution Society, cosponsoring with CREDO Mobile, presented “The 2007-08 Supreme Court Term: What Happened and Why It Matters” at Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe LLP. The event featured a stellar panel: Paul J. Beard II, Principal Attorney, National Litigation Center, Pacific Legal Foundation; Stephen P. Berzon, Partner, Altshuler Berzon LLP; Jeffrey L. Fisher, Associate Professor of Law and Co-Director, Supreme Court Litigation Clinic, Stanford University Law School; Pamela S. Karlan, Kenneth and Harle Montgomery Professor of Public Interest Law and Founding Director, Supreme Court Litigation Clinic, Stanford University Law School and Goodwin Liu, Assistant Professor of Law, Boalt Hall, University of California, Berkeley School of Law. The discussion was moderated by Rosemarie T. Ring, Associate, Munger, Tolles & Olson LLP and president of ACS’s Bay Area Lawyer Chapter. ACS Executive Director, Lisa Brown, delivered opening remarks. The discussion examined the past Term's key opinions in the context of how they affect the everyday lives of all Americans, and, in turn, how the 2008 presidential election might or might not be expected to affect the composition of the Court and the content of its decisions. Specifically, discussion focused on the right to bear arms (D.C. v. Heller), the death penalty (Kennedy v. Louisiana), voter identification requirements (Democratic Party of Indiana v. Rokita/Crawford v. Marion County Election Board), preemption (Riegel v. Medtronic), punitive damages (Exxon Shipping Co. v. Baker) and habeas corpus rights of Guantanamo Bay prisoners (Boumediene v. Bush/Al Odah v. U.S.). The panel was well received by an audience of over 80 attorneys, law students and the Bay Area community at large.
