Constitution in the Classroom: The Separation of Powers & The Electoral Process

Mar 7 2008 - 12:00pm

We visited the 5th grade students at Valley Oaks Elementary in Spring Branch ISD in Houston, Texas, presenting a 50 minute talk on the structure of government set up by the Constitution. Specifically, we focused on how the separation of powers functioned to protect the minority against the will of the majority. We then tailored the discussion to the election process, both in primaries and in the general election, and examined the ways by which delegates, electors, and caucuses function to protect minorities against majority will.
