Steve Harvey Discusses Kitzmiller v. Dover Area School District (Intelligent Design Case)

Nov 29 2006 - 12:00pm

ACS of Syracuse hosts a presentation by Steve Harvey, a lead plaintiffs attorney in Kitzmiller v. Dover Area School District, the first case in the nation to test the constitutionality of teaching “intelligent design” in public school science class. Mr. Harvey will speak to the Syracuse community about his experience with the Kitzmiller case and his views on the future of the intelligent design controversy.

Mr. Harvey is a partner in the Litigation Department of Pepper Hamilton LLP in Philadelphia. He practices in the area of commercial litigation and consumer financial services. Mr. Harvey is well known nationally for his pro bono work for the plaintiffs in Kitzmiller. After a six-week trial, Mr. Harvey and the other lawyers on the plaintiffs’ legal team secured a significant First Amendment victory when a federal judge ruled that intelligent design is clearly religious in nature, is not science and cannot be taught in public school science class as an alternative to the scientific theory of evolution. Mr. Harvey has spoken to audiences at numerous colleges and universities, as well as scientific, civic and religious organizations on the Dover case, and the intersection of science, law and religion.
