ACS Puget Sound Lawyer Chapter presents "When (If Ever) Does Religion Belong in the Classroom?"

On March 26, 2009 the Puget Sound Chapter of the American Constitution Society and the Anti-Defamation League of the Pacific Northwest co-sponsored a luncheon featuring Edward Correia of Latham & Watkins LLP of Washington DC. Mr. Correia, former Special Counsel to President Clinton for Civil Rights, spoke on the topic “When (If Ever) Does Religion Belong in the Classroom?” His remarks included an analysis of the present legal framework under both the Establishment Clause and the Free Exercise Clause of the First Amendment. He examined the limitations of both the intent and purpose tests for adjudicating establishment challenges. He expanded on this topic to include how school districts have been permitted to acknowledge and even explain religious beliefs without endorsing them. A very lively question and answer period followed with participants who were particularly curious about Mr. Correia’s analysis of “intelligent design” teachings. Approximately 60 people attended the luncheon that was organized by Patty Willner of ADL and Drew Hansen of the ACS.
