ACS Los Angeles Lawyer Chapter Hosts "The Future of the Roberts Court"

On January 27th, a spillover crowd packed UCLA Law School to hear Erwin Chemerinsky and Kenneth Starr discuss "The Future of the Roberts Court." Chemerinsky and Starr, both highly respected constitutional law scholars and deans of prominent law schools in Southern California, engaged in a lively dialogue about the Court's docket from the previous and current terms, and shared their thoughts on how the Court's jurisprudence would come to be shaped in the years ahead.

ACS Los Angeles Lawyer Chapter Hosts "Bridging the Divide: Straddling the Worlds of Private Practice and Public Service"


On June 22, 2009, over 60 lawyers and law students gathered for "Bridging the Divide: Straddling the Worlds of Private Practice and Public Service," an ACS Los Angeles Lawyer Chapter event hosted by O'Melveny & Myers LLP. The audience listened to a diverse panel discuss ways that progressive attorneys can succeed in private practice while also keeping active in the worlds of politics and public service. The panelists gave pointers on how to manage successful transitions between the public and private sectors, and on how young attorneys can leverage the resources of their law firms to get more involved in their communities and government.

ACS Los Angeles Lawyer Chapter Hosts "Replacing Justice Souter: President Obama's First Pick & The Future of the Supreme Court"


On Friday, May 22, the ACS Los Angeles Lawyer Chapter presented a lunchtime conversation between Judge Stephen Reinhardt of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit and Professor Adam Winkler of UCLA School of Law to discuss President Obama's first chance to nominate a Supreme Court justice. For the lunchtime crowd gathered at Gibson Dunn's office, Judge Reinhardt provided historical context to explain how a Court that once boasted staunch liberals and champions of individual rights such as William Brennan and Thurgood Marshall has swung dramatically rightward. Judge Reinhardt described how movement conservatives installed conservative jurists on the nation's courts, culminating with the confirmations of Chief Justice Roberts and Justice Alito.
