National spotlights have settled on Thomson, Ill., an unlikely stage for debate over terrorism, security and civil liberties.
Sunday, Governor Pat Quinn and Senator Dick Durbin endorsed moving terror suspects from Guantanamo Bay to the Thomson Correctional Facility in the 500-person town west of Chicago. According to The New York Times, the support of top Illinois Democrats raises "the possibility of a major breakthrough in the Obama administration's efforts to close the military detention facility in Cuba." Leading Illinois Republicans, however, submitted a letter to President Obama declaring that housing suspected terrorists in the maximum security facility would make Illionois "ground zero for Jihadist terrorist plots, recruitment and radicalization."
